What happens when generations shaped by different times and experiences come together to listen, exchange perspectives, learn from one another and discover how much they have to offer each other?

On 30 August 2026, POZITIVO – Skopje, in cooperation with Leaders Without Borders, organized the intergenerational workshop “Bridge Between Generations” at DNEVNA in Skopje, as part of the Erasmus+ project Building Community Links.

The workshop brought together participants from age 17 to 74 in a space designed for something increasingly important in our rapidly changing society – genuine conversation between generations.

Stories that connect generations

The starting point was simple: stories.

Through storytelling, the older participants shared memories, experiences and lessons gathered throughout their lives. Their stories opened conversations about family, relationships, work, values and the many ways everyday life has changed over the decades.

But this was not about looking only at the past.

The stories soon became a bridge to the present and the future. Participants exchanged views about modern lifestyles, technology, communication and the growing influence of artificial intelligence. They discussed how the world is changing, what we are gaining through technological development, but also what we should be careful not to lose along the way.

Different generations did not necessarily see everything in the same way – and that made the conversation even more valuable. Listening to a different perspective became an opportunity to understand why people shaped by different experiences may approach the same issue differently.

When the learners become the teachers

Then, the roles changed.

The younger participants shared their own knowledge and showed the seniors practical digital tips and tricks, demonstrating how technology can support communication, access to information, and everyday activities.

Suddenly, the exchange was moving in both directions.

Life experience met digital experience. Stories met technology. Memories of the past met questions about the future.

And everyone had something to contribute.

This mutual exchange reflects one of the central ideas behind Building Community Links: stronger communities are created when people have opportunities not simply to coexist but to meet, communicate, cooperate, and recognize the value others bring to the community.

From social solidarity to real community experience

The workshop also brought to life the principles explored in the educational resources developed through the Building Community Links project.

The project’s Guide on Social Solidarity explores solidarity not only as a value but also as something that can be learned and strengthened through experience, cooperation, reflection, and meaningful community participation. Its educational approach encourages dialogue, empathy, active engagement and opportunities for people from different backgrounds and generations to learn with and from one another.

Alongside the Social Solidarity Guide, the project has developed additional Guides, educational activities, and practical resources for educators, youth workers, and organizations interested in strengthening social connections, intercultural understanding, and active participation in their communities.

The “Bridge Between Generations” workshop showed what these principles can look like in practice: people sitting together, telling stories, asking questions, sharing skills, challenging assumptions and discovering common ground.

Because building community links does not always begin with a large initiative. Sometimes, it begins with a story, a conversation and the willingness to listen.
